Relationship of Temperament and Character Traits, Emotional Regulation and Perceived Parenting With Self-harming Behaviors in Adolescents

Objectives: The current study aims to provide a structural modeling of self-harm behaviors in adolescents based on their temperament and character traits, emotion regulation strategies, perceived parenting. Methods: This is descriptive/correlational study. population consists all high school students (1-3th grade) during 2017-2018 Tehran, Iran. Of these, 159 with mean age 15±0.75 years were selected by using cluster sampling technique. they assessed Temperament Character Inventory (TCI), Parenting Styles Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ), Cognitive Emotion Regulation (CERQ), Deliberate Self-Harming (DSHI). For data analysis, Pearson correlation test equation conducted LISREL v. 8.8 SPSS 20 applications. Results: Novelty seeking dimension TCI maladaptive cognitive strategies had direct positive relationship self-harming behavior. Although harm avoidance authoritarian parenting no effect behaviors, became effective after mediation strategies. Maladaptive novelty together able predict 22% the variance self- harming behavior Conclusion: personality trait can affect adolescents.Sirwan Karimi
